Subject: [*] A PPD for the DEClaser 1152 ENHANCED!
This is the long-awaited PPD for the DEClaser 1152 laser printer
that never came with the printer. Couldn't figure out how to
use DECimage? No problem. Now, those features are enabled thru
dialog boxes and options when printing. Maybe a little slow for
FULL-page documents, but works great for smaller pictures on a
page. Sometimes may even look as good as a 600 dpi printer!
Give it a try! Of course, this is FREEWARE! But, I'd like to
hear from people...drop me a line at: akim@opus.mco.edu
Enjoy!

Subject: [*] BIRD-SONGS101; digitised bird songs -- educational game
Learn the wonderful songs of birds using the power of the
Macintosh. Learn to identify them by their songs. Package
including parts 1 and 2 contain the Bird Songs application and
four sets of birds, including common birds, woodpeckers, and
sparrows. Review the birds, listen to their songs, and see their
pictures. Then shift into game mode. Challenge yourself in a
game where the computer plays a random bird song and you
must identify the bird by the song. You can also select
background mode, where the program can be instructed to play
random bird songs while you use your computer to do other
things. A great way to sharpen your birding ear! Bird Songs will
play on any Macintosh more modern than the SE, using system
6.0.5 or better.

Subject: [*] BIRD_SONGS_101_PATCH; different digitised bird songs
This Updater will convert Bird Songs 1.0 to 1.0.1. There was a
fatal bug on 1.0 that resulted in some Macintoshes unable to
recognize the Bird Songs files. This updater fixes the problem.
You will need the application Bird Songs 1.0 to use it. If you
don't already have Bird Songs, then simply download version
1.0.1, and you won't need this patch.
Bird Songs is an application written to help you learn the
wonderful songs of birds, and learn to identify them by their
songs. The game includes many common birds. Challenge yourself in
a game mode where the computer plays a random bird song and you

Subject: [*] civ updater for all versions (a game)
Civilization 1.0.7,1.0.8->1.1 updater:
This program will patch both Civilization 1.0.7 and 1.0.8 to version
1.1. The only difference between 1.0.8 and 1.1 is the 'vers' resource,
which has probably led to some confusion. This patches the application in
place, so use it only on a copy.
I made this with ResCompare to clear up the confusion regarding the
1.0.7->1.0.8 and 1.0.8->1.1 updaters, one of which seems to have
disappeared from the archive. There were also some requests on
comp.sys.mac.games for such an updater. Enjoy.
I guess this should go in /games/com to replace the other updater.
Thanks, Jason Holtzapple

DriveTracker was created to help system administrators keep track of the

You may view the amount of free space on all drives onscreen, in a

Hellcats 1.0 to 1.0.4 updater
This patch only converts Hellcats 1.0 to Hellcats version 1.0.4. There is
another patch program to convert 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 (I don't know of any
patch for 1.0.1, or if this versions was ever officially released).
What's New:
The major feature of version 1.0.4 is the support of Sound Manager 3.0 or
greater. (AV users can now have sound for their game.)
Versions 1.01 to 1.03 were various bug fixes.
I've enclosed the "Pacific Conflict" data base because it is slightly larger
and has a more recent modification date then the one that came on my version
1.0 disk.
Enjoy.

This is a new file to replace the old "nisus-icons-n-ruler.hqx"

better looking, more homogeneous and coherent icons. I added
some ICON resources for the Nisus dialog boxes, too.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] Jotto ][ 1.0.1 (source code for a game)
This version, 1.0.1, of Jotto ][ has been updated so it can be compiled for
the Power Macintosh. Colour has also been added and a couple bugs fixed.
Jotto ][ is a simple word game based on logic and frustration. The computer
will pick a 5- or 6-letter word from a 2000+ word database, and you have 15
tries to guess it. You will get feedback on how many letters in your guess
are in the actual word, but beware: each guess must be a valid word, or you
will or you will not get any feedback about it at all.
Jotto ][ is the sequel to Jotto and Jotto Deluxe, featuring better graphics,
more sounds, animation, the ability to play with either 5- or 6-letter words,
the ability to learn new words if desired, and better "about" boxes. It
supports color, grayscale, and B/W monitors and works under system 6 or 7.
(For technical reasons, sounds may require system 6.0.7 or later.) Please
e-mail comments and suggestions to the author at f8dy@netaxs.com.
This game is distributed under the GNU General Public License. This archive
contains complete CodeWarrior 1.0a4 source code and related project files. It
also contains the source to another application used to set up Jotto's self-
integrity checker. The code in this archive demonstrates handling events,
menus, apple events, a prefs file, Gestalt environment checking, hierarchical
menus, dialogs, windows, standard file dialogs, and the soon-to-be-famous
"cough to continue" modal dialog filter proc. None of this is very well
commented, but feel free to direct any questions to f8dy@netaxs.com.

MemWin and KMemWin are tools for displaying free memory in the frontmost
application -- the first shows memory in bytes and the second shows it in
kilobytes (hence the K). In both programs, the window always floats above
all other programs and windows, but can be hidden by typing Cmd-Escape.
They require the Text Services Manager of System 7.1 or later, so
if you dont have System 7.1 you are out of luck. Both are implemented
as System Extensions (actually background only programs), so place
whichever one you like into the Extensions folder.

Group 5 will be on its way soon, with names of course!
Background: 256 color, 64x64 pixel ppats. They look good with 256
greys; 16 or 4 colors/greys isn't all that great, but they'll work. They
can be installed with ResEdit, Desktop Textures, BeforeDark, Wallpaper,

It may be included on info-mac's CD-ROM archive.

Personal Log v1.0.4
by Michael F. Kamprath

Requirements: System 7.0 or greater.
Have you ever wanted to keep a diary? Do you need to document your actions?
Would you like to be able to easily take notes? Do you currently keep notes in
one, big, disorganized Word file?
If you answered yes to any of these, then Personal Log is for you. Personal
Log
allows you to keep a collection of notes in a single, easy-to-use file. You
can
password protect this file, search it's entries, and even "speak" the entries
(if you have Speech Manager" installed). Unlike other "note taking" programs,
Personal Log's interface is very simple and easy to use. Personal Log fully
supports System 7: Balloon Help is enabled in every menu, dialog, and window;
you may use Apple Script to control Personal Log; and the interface is in full
color (when available).
Personal Log is shareware; the fee is US$15. See the accompying manual for

stack "Preschool Primer Sounds I" (which contains all the required digitized
sounds) EVEN if you have the previous Preschool Primer stack. Sorry, I
couldn't figure out a way to update the previous stack!
* About This Stack *
This stack was created over a period of about four years for my son. I
periodically added new features as the need arose. It has helped him learn
his "ABC's" when he was about two and a half (he's 6 now). It helped him
memorize several phone numbers including 911 and his own phone number by
the time he was three and a half (looking back I ask myself if this really
was a good idea). It helped us provide a simple method to try to teach him
about child safety and the days of the week.
It has really helped my son that he was able to learn at his own pace. It
is amazing how easily, eagerly and quickly he has learned through such a
simple interface. It consists primarily of buttons that, when clicked, play
a sound, flash a button or two and teach the child by sheer, although
non-boring, visual and aural repetitious discovery. My second child is two
now and is starting to mouse around on the stack.
This stack consists of 6 simple cards for the child and 1 card for the
supervising adult:
* Child's Name Allows the child to select the name which will be spoken
on other cards of this stack.
* Phone Numbers Resembles a touch-tone keypad with spoken numbers.
Optionally touch-tones are played when the buttons
are clicked. Several buttons exist to teach the child
important phone numbers.
* The Alphabet Speaks the alphabet and has several buttons to spell
special words like Grandmother, Mommy, etc.
* Numbers Speaks the numbers from 0-109. It also teaches even
and odd numbers and can count by fives and tens.
* Child Safety This tries to teach the child:
(1) Not to let anyone pick him/her up (from school,
for example) without that person knowing a pre-
arranged "secret word."
(2) Not to play with electrical plugs.
(3) Not to open the door until (s)he asks, "Who is it?"
* Days of the Week Speaks the days of the week. Includes "Today is..."
"Yesterday was..." and "Tomorrow is...."
* Preferences Allows the supervising adult to set a few parameters
and adjust the stack's card size.
* New Features For Version 2.0 *
Only two cards have been added to this stack since version 1.0, (1) A
Preferences Card intended to be used by the supervising adult, and (2) A
Child's Name Card the allows the child to select his name so it will be
used through out the stack. The main improvements to this stack are in the
user interface.

Hi !
This is a (minor) bug fix release of RAM Disk Iconer.
RAM Disk Iconer 1.0.1 is a control panel that allows you
to customize your RAM Disk name and icon. It requires a
RAM Disk capable Mac with Color QuickDraw and System 7.0
or up. Should work on a PowerMacintosh, but not tested.
RAM Disk Iconer is PostcardWare : if you decide to keep it,
please send me a postcard.

strategy and arcade-style reactions.
This version is a major upgrade with many changes and improvements.
Two things, First: Note that I am not the author although I am in constant

Subject: [*] RunTime 1.2.1 (bug fix release); displays power-on time
Hi !
This is RunTime, a little app that gives you the total power-on
time of your Macintosh. Tested under System 6.07 and System 7.1
on the following Macs : ci, fx, vx, Quadra 700.
Also tested on a PowerMacintosh 8100... and it works !!!
Version 1.2.1 fixes a stupid bug in RunTime 1.2 which caused the
default view to be saved each time the window was moved.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Macintosh models prior to the IIci don't remember how long they've
been running, so RunTime is useless on theses machines.
RunTime is is free and can be distributed freely.
New in version 1.2 : RunTime can now run in background.
Window is now moveable.
Display gets updated when the PRAM counter
is incremented.
Window position and preferred view are saved.

The scan DA works fine and brings up a new scan field properly. My problem
is that when I open the Thunderworks application, and click "new scan" or

"Sorry there isn't enough memory to completer the current operation"
This is strange since I haven't even opened anything yet and I would think

I am trying to find the archives for volumes 1 & 2 of csmp.digest (I can
only seem to find volume 3 in the places where I knew to look like here,
dartmouth, uoregon, etc).
You can search all volumes of the comp.sys.mac.programmer digest through
WAIS. If you're a Mosaic user, try wais://cmns.think.com:210/CSMP?. If you
use WAIS directly, retrieve comp.sys.mac.programmer.src from the directory
of servers and use that.
Other sources of interest to Mac users:
wais://cmns.think.com:210/TIDB? (macintosh-tidbits.src) is TidBITS.
wais://cmns.think.com:210/MAC? (info-mac.src) is the info-mac digest.
wais://cmns.think.com:210/TIDB MAC CSMP? (macintosh-news.src) is all
three (c.s.m.p., TidBITS, and info-mac) put together.
Unfortunately Mosaic (at least xmosaic) fails to strip out some of the
formatting info provided by this particular server, so the text comes out
studded with markup. I've written to the mosaic maintainers about this, but
haven't heard anything from them yet.

Use Add/Strip 3.0.3 by Jon Wind. Sumex has
util/add-strip-302.hqx

util/add-strip-303-updt.hqx
to update to 3.0.3.
This marvelous program has the ability to insert tabs at up to 200 separate
line positions that you specify. You have to put a line at the beginning of
the file so that the program knows where to insert the tabs; it will delete
that header line when it creates the file you wish. Well worth the $25
shareware fee requested!

What is System Update 3.0?
System Update 3.0 is a set of software enhancements that improves the
performance and reliability of Macintosh computers running system
software version 7.1, 7.1.1 (System 7 Pro), or 7.1.2 (for Power
Macintosh).
System Update 3.0 provides all of the enhancements of System
Update 2.0.1, Hardware System Update 2.0, and Hardware System
Update 1.0, plus additional enhancements. (For a review of the
System Update 2.0.1, Hardware System Update 2.0, and Hardware
System Update 1.0 enhancements, see "What Other Enhancements
Does System Update 3.0 Provide?" at the end of this document.)
What are the enhancements that System Update 3.0 provides?
System Update 3.0 introduces the following enhancements:
- Provides system-level improvements to increase overall system
performance and reliability on most Macintosh models.
- Corrects a problem that caused some programs to quit
unexpectedly or caused the computer to freeze when you
attempted to open programs over the network. This
includes/replaces all of the functionality of Network
Launch Fix (and the Installer will delete it).
- Corrects a problem that potentially allowed the system to
become corrupted during a power failure or a crash.
This corruption would prevent the Macintosh from restarting.
- Prevents a PowerBook from trying to spin up its hard drive
when the system needs to warn the user that there are only
10 seconds of battery power remaining.
- Fixes a problem that prevented the Macintosh Plus from using
any system software newer than 7.1. Users wishing to upgrade
to newer system software must also delete the Finder
Preferences file from the Preferences folder and restart.
- Fixes the "About This Macintosh" box so the memory usage
line does not get drawn outside of the box's bounds.
- Prevents the potential file/media corruption that can happen
when working with a file that is on a remote volume and the
connection to that volume is lost. Now, when the remote volume
is lost, its icon will remain dimmed on the desktop (similar
to what happens to the icon for a manually ejected floppy disk).
All attempts to open items on the lost volume will result in
an access privilege error. If you need to save your work on
the open file, you will need to use "Save As..." (or the equivalent)
to save it to a different volume. In order to re-connect with the
lost volume, you will first need to close the file you were
working with, then drag the lost volume's dimmed icon to the Trash.
- Increases reliability for remote file saving when the client is
running System 7.1 or greater and the server is running a pre-7.0
system and using pre-3.0 AppleShare.
- Fixes a problem with throwing away folders that are on an
AppleShare volume. Sometimes when attempting to empty the
Trash, the Finder would warn that the folder contained items
in use and could not be deleted. The Finder will now properly delete such
folders.
- Fixes a problem where a Power Macintosh, Quadra 840AV, or 660AV
may hang if a CD-ROM disk is inserted when file sharing is on and
a large file is being transferred.
System Update 3.0 includes the following updates:
- Updates the Standard File package to include many fixes and enhancements.
The most significant fix corrects a crash problem when more than 20 volumes
are mounted. The most significant enhancement is the use of color icons.
- Updates the Easy Access control panel to version 7.2. This new version
allows Sticky Keys to remain active after waking up if it was active when
the PowerBook or Portable went to sleep. Also, Easy Access now remembers
whether sticky keys, mouse keys, and slow keys were on or off between
restarts.
- Replaces TeachText with SimpleText version 1.0. Among other improvements,
SimpleText allows multiple documents to be open simultaneously, and allows
users to easily use a variety of fonts, font sizes, and font styles.
- Includes Apple HD SC Setup version 7.3.1,. This new version fixes a
crash problem version 7.3 has when run on Macintosh models that do
not support virtual memory.
- Updates the Memory control panel to version 7.3. This new version
prevents a potential crash during boot if the RAM disk was set too
large. Also, this control panel now opens with 32-bit addressing on.
- Updates the PowerBook control panel to version 7.3.1, the PowerBook
Setup control panel to version 7.3.1, and the PowerBook Display control
panel to version 1.1. This package of related control panels reorganizes
and simplifies several controls.
- Updates the Battery desk accessory to version 7.1.1. This new version
provides better support for the Duo 230.
- Updates the TV Setup control panel to version 1.0.1. This new version
supports HRC cable systems. This version also fixes a problem that
would sometimes cause the screen to darken after returning from TV mode.
- Updates the Screen control panel to version 1.0.4. This new version
corrects a problem on the LC 575.
- Updates the PC Setup control panel to version 1.0.2. This version
provides a fix for users of the Macintosh DOS Compatibility Card that
are experiencing interference when using a single 14" display and the
PC is in the foreground. If you are experiencing an interference problem,
make sure the "Fade Screen" option is selected in the updated PC Setup
control panel. With this option selected, switching to the Macintosh
will be slightly slower but the video interference will disappear.
- Updates System Enabler 003 to version 1.1 for use with the LC III.
- Updates System Enabler 040 to version 1.1 for use with the Quadra 610,
650, and 800 and the Centris 610 and 650. This update also adds support
for the Quadra 610 and 650.
- Updates System Enabler 065 to version 1.2 for use with the Quadra 605,
LC475, and LC575. This new version removes some minor unnecessary
components.
- Updates System Enabler 088 to version 1.2 for use with the Quadra 840AV
and 660AV. This update fixes some serial communication problems and delivers
improvements to the Resource Manager and other system components that
increase system performance.
- Updates Sysetm Enabler 403 to version 1.0.2 for use with the Color
Classic II, LC520, and LC550.
- Updates the PowerBook Duo Enabler to version 1.0 for use with the PowerBook
Duo 210, 230, 250, and 270c. This new version allows the use of type II
batteries. It also incorporates the Duo Battery Patch for all PowerBook Duo
models except the Duo 270c, which does not need it.
- Updates the PowerPC Enabler to version 1.0.1 for use with the Power
Macintosh 6100, 7100, and 8100. This new version fixes a problem with some
large monitors connected to the AV video card, improves Energy Star
compatibility for certain monitors connected to the built-in video port,
updates the Communications Toolbox, fixes an occasional memory manager
problem, improves the serial port performance, improves the video quality
of the High Performance Video card in certain situations, and preserves
the "Playthrough" and "CD Audio In" settings in the Sound Control panel
across reboots. The PowerPC Enabler also supersedes the files "!TYC"
and "!PowerAV Update" (and the Installer will delete them).
- Updates the PowerPC Upgrade Card Enabler to version 1.0.1 for use with
the PowerPC Upgrade Card installed in the Centris 610 and 650 and the
Quadra 610, 650, 700, 800, 900, and 950. This new version updates the
Communications Toolbox and fixes an occasional memory manager problem.
What Other Enhancements Does System Update 3.0 Provide?
System Update 3.0 includes enhancements from System Update 2.0.1, Hardware
System Update 2.0, and Hardware System Update 1.0 (listed below). Some
enhancements are Macintosh-model specific while others apply to a range
of models.
- Improves the reliability of high-speed modems and similar devices
connected to Macintosh LC, LC II, IIsi, IIvx, IIvi, Classic II, Quadra 900,
and Quadra 950 computers.
- Improves the accuracy of the system clock in Macintosh LC, LC II,
IIsi, IIvx, IIvi, Classic II, Quadra 900, and Quadra 950 computers.
- Corrects problems ejecting floppy disks when the computer is shut down
on Macintosh IIsi, IIci, IIvx, IIvi, Macintosh Quadra 700, and Macintosh
Quadra 950 computers.
- Addresses possible floppy disk drive and hard disk problems with the
Macintosh IIsi, IIci, IIvx, IIvi, Centris, Quadra, and PowerBook and
PowerBook Duo computers.
- Removes horizontal white lines that may appear while scrolling on
Quadra and Centris systems with a Macintosh 16" Color Display.
- Prevents fonts from being needlessly locked in memory during the boot
process. This frees up memory on affected machines.
- Corrects color problems with the Apple Basic Color monitor on Macintosh
Centris and Quadra computers. (NOTE: If Hardware System Update 1.0,
Hardware System Update 2.0, or System Update 2.0.1 extensions or the
Basic Color Monitor extension are already installed on your computer,
this update replaces them. The 3.0 update removes the Basic Color Monitor
and the ADBReInit extensions and replaces them with a System Update 3.0
extension.)
- Adds software for the Apple Adjustable Keyboard, allowing you to connect
the keyboard to any Macintosh computer without separately installing
special keyboard software. This software is not needed by Power Macintoshes,
but is needed by the Power Macintosh Upgrade Card.
- Updates the Macintosh Color Classic System Enabler (System Enabler 401,
version 1.0.5). This new version allows the Apple IIe Card and software
to be used with the Color Classic. In addition, this revised System Enabler
improves mouse performance with the Color Classic. (NOTE: To use the Apple
IIe Card with system software version 7.1 on a Color Classic, you need to
have version 2.2.1 of the Apple IIe Card software. You can obtain an upgrade
package for the Apple IIe Card software by contacting an Apple-authorized
dealer, or by using the AppleLink path Apple Products: Apple SW Updates:
Macintosh: Peripheral Software: Apple IIe Card for Macintosh LC.)
- Updates System Enabler 131 (version 1.0.3) for the PowerBook 160, 165, 165c,
and 180 to support 12" monitors and improve reliability. (NOTE: There is a
very small chance that your PowerBook may not boot when you turn it on for
the first time after installing the update. If this happens, turn the
computer off and back on, and press Command-Option-P-R while the computer
starts up.) System Enabler 131 replaces System Enabler 121 and System
Enabler 111 (and the Installer will delete these files).
- Installs the Sound Manager Update to improve sound performance on most
Macintosh computers. (NOTE: When this software is installed, your system
sound will revert to the Simple Beep. After installation, you may wish to
reset the Sound control panel to your preferred sound.)

Subject: Minimum system 7.1 (summary)
Several people responed to my plea for help in preparing a minimal S7.1 for
use on an emergency repair disk.
Al Bloom was the first to reply with a suggestion to grab the
min-system-installer utility from Sumex
(util/min-system-installer-101.hqx). This works a treat, and comes with a
useful file giving you the resource numbers of all the resources which can
be removed.
A couple of people said to use the custom install option to install a
minimum system for a particualar machine. That's no good, I need to be able
to get into any machine, and the min system for a particular machine still
doesn't leave enough room on the floppy for anything useful.
Rob Shaw suggested to copy the system on the Disk Tools disk. Yes, that'd
be OK, but my Disk Tools disk got trashed a long time ago by an SE/30 with
a duff SWIM chip (I was actually trying to make a backup at the time!) and
I've given up on the Apple dealer getting me another one.
I don't think the system on the Disk Tools disk is small enough anyway.
So, there you have it!

Ain't UNIX wonderful (well, its certainly good for some things)? The
person who started this thread did say the account was on a UNIX system, so
reading should work. Those of us logging into VM or VMS won't have it so
easy.

What happens depends on what the host emulation does when the screen fills.
At least on our system (telneting from a VM system is probably logically
flawed anyway) some version of "More?" on each data page can't be avoided.
Presumably there is software out there that will kick the host into
"transparent mode" (as do Kermit and PCTrans). Also, at many places
student accounts that don't have access to POP won't have access to an SMTP
server either (i.e., your mileage may vary).

I have similar problems (using an LCII and 7.0.1 with Tune-Up 1.0.1). It's
real annoying. The only workarounds I've found are:
1) ALWAYS print in grayscale. That will eliminate the usual message saying
your document contains color and you have the B/W cartridge installed.
Documents that appear to be in B/W to you are often color documents (since
black and white can be created from a color pallette like any other
colors).
2) Use a utility to reset the printer port when you are told it's in use. I
found CommCloser on AOL--that works. But it's not on U-M or Sumex, and I
haven't done an Archie search for it. Resetting the port this way is easier
than rebooting, which also cures the "in use" problem.
I once read that holding down the option key when clicking OK on the "in
use" message allows you to use the port anyway; that doesn't work for me.
The new DW driver is also a disaster with Print Shop Deluxe.

I, too, just returned from the MacWorld Expo in DC, but I am better able
than you to put it in perspective, because I have attended every MacWorld
Expo ever held in Boston (since 1985), at least four in San Francisco, one
in Tokyo and the only other one held in DC. In all cases I was an ordinary
attendee, not an exhibitor or speaker.
The first DC expo (1988?) was a dissappointment, not worthy of comparison
with a REAL MacWorld Expo. This one in my opinion compares very poorly even
with that. I suggest that its theme should have been, "It's a Small World
after All."
I am not criticizing any details of the show, only its scope. The show was
lacking in participation by most of the heavy hitters (Apple didn't even
have a booth) and had a very local flavor. A large number of the vendors
were from the nearby area, and the list seemed to me to be weighted with
consultants, trainers and VARs.
I believe every Mac enthusiast who has never done so should make a real
effort to get to a major MacWorld Expo (San Francisco or Boston) just for
the experience of being overwhelmed by the scope of the thing.
For two to four days (don't try to do it in one) you will be surrounded by
Mac enthusiasts from all over the world, and you will be able to see and
touch a veritable treasure trove of everything you have ever heard of for
the Mac (and much that you haven't). It is a good antidote for having to
spend the rest of your year in a world dumbed down for DOS that looks at
life through fogged Windows. It never fails to recharge my batteries.
It would be a shame if you let the very small subset of a real MacWorld
Expo that you just saw keep you away from Boston. It was not even a good
sampler of the real thing.

Has anyone tried to open the Map Control Panel with ResEdit to change

I opened a copy of the CP with Resedit, and the most likely candidate was

However, when I tried to double-click this, I get the following message:
The list contains too many items. The resource may be too big to be

I have tried increasing the memory for ResEdit, but this does not do

Subject: Square One (Hint)
Dear Netters,
If you have ResEdit 2.1 (or later) and Square One 1.5.2 or later, you can do a
wonderful trick. Edit the Menus resource of the Launch Menu to have the
command key be 1 or any number of your choice. The main thing is that the
command key does not conflict with any global command keys, or those within
Square One. Set square one to activate on a hot key, and use the arrow
keys to navigate through any pallete. What this does is make a completely
mouse-free launchpad for any application or document. All the applications,
DAs, control panels, and folders can be openned directly from the keyboard.
Best of all, you are the designer of your own keyboard commands, so you can
design the keyboard commands to work the way you work.
In addition you can use the arrow keys to navigate on any pallete you create.
You don't need a pallete that has all the applications, you can create
palletes by the categories you choose, and open them one at a time.
No programming experience necessary. Only open the Menu resource in ResEdit,
save file and quit. Keep a copy of the original square one just in case, and
then open the application square one to do the editing.
Disclaimer: an enduser of Square One 1.5.2 for only 3 days, and this satisfied
already. Do I need one? Square One is by Binary software.

The situation is normal. Apple is AFU.
So am I. I was answering my mail while downloading the three disk images
and hadn't looked at them yet.
The Apple HEd Gopher Server has SU3 in two different places, one with
two images (Supplemental SW) and one with three (System SW). The readme
in the three-disk place was rather firm that one needed the third (800K)
disk to get the new Disk First Aid and HD SC Setup. Horsefeathers. It
can only be used on a Mac with only an 800K floppy drive, and that is
all it gives you -- DFA 7.2 and HDSC 7.3.1. Both are on Disk 1, too.
Save your bandwidth and don't get Disk 3 unless you have a Plus. And if
you have a plus, don't get either Disk 1 or Disk 2 -- unless you have an
FDHD.
If you have a IIci like me, don't bother to get Disk 2, either. All it
contains are System Enablers for the new toys.
Gee, Apple is just *so* supportive.

Subject: WriteNow 4.0 - 2 major bugs
Dear Netters,
Before I go any further, does anyone have Softkey International's new
technical support line phone number or address?
Wordstar was just bought out by Softkey presenting several difficulties in
reporting the bugs that are in WriteNow 4.0.
First bug, is that the whole image does not necessarily get imported when you
use the import PICT graphics image.
Second bug, it does not allow me to
scroll past the ruler's 6.5 inch column, meaning I can't see where my right
margin is. This used to be possible in earlier versions of WriteNow.
Instead of a flexible scroll bar at the bottom of text-editing window, it is
fixed, so all I see is what is on the window. I tried clicking both right
corner boxes to no avail. I can shrink the window, but I can't enlarge it
past the point the 1 inch - 6.5 inch ruler is set at.
Third bug, the ruler does not represent the right margin
correctly, even after a page setup explicitly tells it to have a left margin
of 1 inch. Instead of getting in my printout a left margin of 1 inch, it is
at 2 inches. The ruler however, indicates the left margin is at 1 inch.
Has anyone else experienced these bugs, or found ways to solve them?
Running a System 7.0.0 Macintosh LC with 10 MB of RAM, and 12 MB of hard disk
space to spare. It is attached to a 12 inch RGB.
Buying a new monitor costs too
much desk space, as well as too much money. Also anything other than the 12
inch monitor won't fit into my I/O design carying case. So my question is if
there are software sollutions to my problem, or if it is best to write to
Softkey to ask them to fix the bugs and release a new version soon?
I know I asked this question before, but then many people couldn't get their
subscription to the digest, due to a problem at the listserv which now is
fixed.

The factory settings generally are the best you can do with a Zoom. I use:
AT&FL0S95=44
(&F = factory settings, L0 = quietest setting for the d**n loud speaker,
S95=44 displays the negotiated error correction and compression settings).
As reported in the trade press, the Zoom is poorer than most modems at
dealing with phone line noise (the probable cause of your hangups while
trying to connect). I've at least one BBS that I can't connect to with any
better than 9.6 kbps and NO protocol (see the manual for the settings).
The BBS runs First Class which does its own error correction anyway and
compression doesn't really help ZModem transfers of StuffIT archives, so
there's no real loss other than the lower speed.

despite the offers of $100 I've put in many Macintosh classifieds online,

Software Perspectives Announces Texter and MorphileX
LAKE RIDGE, Virginia--MAY 11, 1994--Software Perspectives today announced
two new HyperCard externals: Texter and MorphileX.
The Texter XFCN allows you to write any length of text to a TEXT
resource. This is useful for creating preference files or storing large
amounts of text. Texter can also read the information back in.
MorphileX is an XFCN which enables you to set or get the creator and type
of a file from within HyperCard. This gives developers the ability to
set the creator and type of files created by their standalone HyperCard
applications to include their own unique icons. MorphileX is based on
Morphile, a utility which was released in March 1994 as part of the
Software Perspectives Applications for Macintosh (SPAM).
Both externals contain Software Perspectives new Command Processor
technology which makes controlling externals easier. Additionally, a new
Error Manager has been included which provides a clean method of
reporting errors to the user. Both externals require HyperCard 2.1 or
greater or SuperCard 1.6 or greater.
MorphileX and Texter will be released May 30th, and should be
available on most online services and major Internet sites shortly
thereafter.
The license fee for public domain, shareware and freeware is $15.
Commercial licensing is $65, which includes 1 year of free
updates/upgrades.
